Mark Pollock | An Inspirational Story
Mark Pollock lost his sight at the age of 22 and since then has competed in sports events in the world’s harshest environments: across desert, mountain, ocean and polar regions. These amazing feats include 6 marathons in 7 days in the Gobi Desert; a race to the South Pole; and, the Round Ireland yacht race. Mark achieved all this despite being completely blind. Having overcome the difficulties of blindness, tragedy struck in July 2010 when Mark fell and suffered a spinal injury which has left him paralysed from the waist down.

In order for Mark to be able to undertake an aggressive rehabilitation programme involving a spinal care injury centre called ‘Project Walk’, the Mark Pollock Trust was set up to raise money to cover the cost of Project Walk, as well as the conventional rehabilitation costs associated with paralysis. Mark has also recently become one of the first people in the world to trial robotic legs. Mark recently had the honour of carrying the Olympic Flame ahead of the London 2012 Olympics. Steven Graham, Avolon Vice-President of Marketing, commented:
“Avolon is delighted to support Mark who is a close friend of the business. He has given motivating and memorable leadership lectures at a number of our key events. Mark’s sporting achievements and commitment to succeed, in the face of severe adversity, are truly inspirational. We look forward to working further with the Mark Pollock Trust and are proud to be a sponsor of the 2012 cycle.”
